Yah, black residue is fine, but if its greasy, its likely oil.

No smoke at all Rascal, except for the cold weather steam while the engine
is warming up because the weather has been so cold.

Are you sure you got that right? My tailpipe has dry black normal exhaust
residue that I'm thinking is normal. If it's greasy I would think that
would mean there is some blow-by from the BP gasket. (if that's possible).
