I think its mostly carbon build up... I noticed that too. Number 1 is
wet but I think thats because I got coolant in that one when I pulled
the head.

On this engine - when you change the timing belt, you remove the
tensioner (the thing with the nail in it). To reinstall... you have to
compress that little piston that the nail is going through, and use
something, like a thin allen wrench, or a thick paper clip, or in this
case a nail... to lock that pin in a retracted position. YOu then bolt
the tensioner in place - and pull the pin/nail/rod/whatever OUT of the
tensioner before you button everything up. They didn't - the nail was
left in - not allowing the tensioner to put tension on the cam belt.
