Hey Don - yes the 4x4 steering gears from 1987 to 1996 are the same.
Salvage yard guys can be difficult to deal with at times :) Most don't
like it when you try and tell them they are wrong or if you want to try
and use a part for a non-stock application. I got a line of bullshit
from one, that they were not going to give me any kind of warranty on an
engine because I was not going to put it in a truck that originally used
that engine. I wanted to put a V8 in my V6 Dakota (and still do).
Needless to say I don't recommend that salvage yard to people anymore.

Trannys - you should be able to use any transmission up to a 1995 model.
After 1995 they went to the electronic controls. Look for a 46RH
transmission - or an A-518 - they are pretty much the same things.
Those were usually found behind V8's and are much stronger than the
A-500's and the 42RH's that come stock in V6's.

I HATE THE A-500!!!!

(you knew that was coming...don't roll your eyes at me!)
