why not? it leaves no residue, that's the whole point of brake cleaner.

I like to get out all the contaminates that I can when I change my gear
oil, though for a strictly road vehicle I probably wouldn't bother, but by
the time I change my gear oil there is usually some milkyness to it from
water contamination so I *always* spray out diffs and then wipe the bottom
dry as best I can.

I pull the cover, let it drain, hit the sealing surface on the axle with a
wire wheel to take the RTV off, spray it out to get the bits of RTV off
the gears (as if they'd notice rubber....) and all the brake cleaner
evaporates while I'm cleaning the diff cover and putting sealant on it.
