You are correct Don, I never really realize it when I am right.....its
usually quite accidental....

I believe you're right, the PS belt is unfortnately the farthest from
the front, which means all the other belts have to come off first. The
good thing is, all the other belts come off easier than the obnoxious
PS belt. I don't have A/C, however. For the alternator, just loosen
the top bracket bolt (into the alt) and loosen the tensioning bolt
(many turns) till you can get the belts off. For the smog pump, loosen
it up like you did the PS pump. It's much easier to get to than the PS
pump though. Then, guide each belt off around the fan (it turns freely
now... extra help). Might as well replace all your belts now.

Rascal is more right than he realizes in saying getting the new one ON
is harder... maybe I've always missed the best technique, but I hate
dealing with the stupid PS belt. Use a big 1/2" drive ratchet, stick
it in that square hole, and use the ratchet to tension the belt while
using another wrench to tighten up the PS pump.

That was alot of explanation for belt replacement. Hope it helps,
though. My 89 Dak is right out in my driveway. If you need more help,
feel free to e-mail directly.
