   That's definitely been the case in the past, but from what I have
seen, not any longer. I don't know if there are federal regulations
involved or what, but nowadays, the plan for a coal mine requires a
reclamation step, and the land that results from that is really nice.
I think they usually turn it into recreation areas with lakes/ponds,
or farms, etc. A lot of the time, the land actually looks better
after the mining than before.
