I'm sure Andy has some experience to support the fast wearing of Autolite
plugs so I thought I'd offer up my experience which tends to indicate they
are not all that way.
My Dak is primarily a race truck but I do rack up about 2-3000 miles per
year....along with about 200 drag strip passes (shifting at 6000 rpm).
I've tried a lot of different spark plugs and never seen a bit of
performance difference from them.
However, when I used Champions, their gap would open several thousandths per
year and the center electrode would be rounded.
Not so with Autolites. I've run them for 3-4 years with only one
thousandths of wear occurring in that time. The center electrode was still
flat and had well defined edges.
I use 3924 which is the replacement for a stock Champion. I've tried the
colder 3923 and track times indicate no difference. I would only use them
if your truck has a tendency to ping.
I've also tried indexing the plugs and again found no measurable difference
in track times. Not worth the effort! It works in some types of
combustion chambers and plug angles (chevy?) but apparently not in magnum
engines.
Not that it really matters but I use a .040 gap with good results. If you
do a lot of driving in slow traffic I'd recommend staying with whatever the
factory setting is. My '92 happens to be .035.
My ignition system is currently stock but I have tried Accel and Jacobs.
Both died an early death and neither showed me any performance improvement.
HTH someone.
