Try the Midland 79-290. I had one in my car for a while. I would still have it
if I wasn't so poor right now. Removable faceplate, digital display, most of
the main functions you would expect, super easy to mod, especially the earlier
versions and SSB too. It is also smaller than a full sized rig, easier to fit
in small places.

The last antenna I had was a K40. It worked great for me. I bought it mainly
because I park in a parking garage at work, and no antenna will fit inside. The
K40 has a quick release base, so I could pull it off and keep it inside. Comes
in magnetic, bolt on and trunklip versions.
