I have mine hooked up in my car and truck. I just ran an miniplug adapter
from the aux inputs on the head units. I have one of these [1] to get a
line-out from my ipod. I have the USB varient but they also have firewire
ones. I didn't feel like spending the extra cash for an ipod specific
control feature. There wasn't one available when I bought the head unit in
my Dak and I didn't want to spend more than $100 on a head unit for my
Daytona. It's worked well, I haven't burnt an MP3 CD in almost a year now.
