try loom material made from nylon. ( black colored nylon of course ). see
polypropylene has a lower melting point than nylon. thats why they melt. ( poly is
used for about 80% of those looms you see at auto-zone and pep-boys. ) but you can get
nylon from McMaster-Carr.

i have had my manifold heat shields off for 3 years and have never had a problem with the
nylon wire looms melting.

now, on the other hand, the bushings for the upper contol arm are very close to the
manifold. those may dry out and crack over time. so, for that reason you may want to
keep the heat shields. i opted not to keep the heat shields at all. ;-)
