I just sold my Dakota. Can you please remove me from the list? Thanks, it's
been helpful!

Sounds like it just needs to be flushed and serviced. Maybe a sticky valve
in the trans. Mine did that 90,000 miles ago and once it was serviced,
never happened again.

My brother in law has a 1997 Ram 1500, 4x2, with 5.2L V8 and 46RH tranny
with these
symptoms:

SYMPTOM 1
At a red light, with the truck idling in Drive gear, the light goes green,
and he presses
the gas pedal. The truck revs to about 900 rpms and then 1st gear suddenly
engages
causing a loud thump.

SYMPTOM 2
When driving sometimes it hunts between 1st and 2nd gears. it will go to
2nd but once
2nd is engaged it might go back to 1st again.

Has anyone seen this? Sounds a bit like a TSB I have seen somewhere.

I am moving to chicago here in the next couple of weeks. How can I tow
my truck using a rental truck? Use the car carriers or tow dollies?
Which is best. The dolly is cheaper but i dont think the carriers are
big enough for the dak

I don't know anything about the other companies since I
haven't had the opportunity to use them, but as far as U-Haul
goes, they actually have 2 car carriers. The older style is
orange, and it is smaller than the newer style which is silver
(galvanized steel). The silver one was big enough for a '78
Dodge Van that I moved so I think it would work with a Dak. If
you drill down far enough into www.uhaul.com, you will be able
to find the measurements of both trailers, which should allow
you to determine wether your Dak will fit or not.

As far as the dolly goes, hopefully someone more knowledgeable
than I can chime in on those, but I think if you do use them
you will want to disconnect your rear driveshaft so that your
trans/engine aren't spinning without proper lubrication. If
you have a 4x4, maybe you can just pop the transfer case into
neutral? I'm not 100% sure on that, maybe someone else can
verify that.

Another option, depending on how much stuff you have to move...
Rent a trailer instead of a truck, use your Dak to tow the trailer
and put all your household stuff in there. That would likely
be a cheaper option, but if you have a lot of stuff or can't
find a trailer to rent, then that probably doesn't help you out
much.

  Good luck with it!

That's what I did when I moved from NJ to MA and then back to NJ. I didn't
have much stuff so I got a small trailer and loaded up my truck bed. Handy
when you don't have someone else to drive the other vehicle.

Brian,
Having just moved from Delaware to California I used
a 26 foot U-Haul truck and got their car carrier for
my Dak. I felt more comfortable going all the way
across country using it rather than a dolly. I wasn't
worried about wear on my vehicle tires or drive line.
I would offer this piece of advice in reference to a
car carrier. Make sure you inspect the straps that go
over the front wheels. You might even want to trial
load your Dak on to the trailer and make sure it can
be fully secured before you leave the U-Haul or
whoever rental place. On the carrier I used, the one
for the right front tire had been repaired using
rivets before I rented it. As such, the strap was too
short to go over top of my tire and secure my truck. I
ended up using a 10000 lb tie down strap I had to
secure the truck. If your Dak has over-sized tires on
it, the stock tire tie downs on a car carrier may not
fit. You would probably be better off using a set of
heavy duty ratcheting tie down cargo straps from Auto
Zone or someplace, and securing the frame of your Dak
to the frame of the trailer.

Ray Irons

I'm fairly new to this list and usually just lurk reading the posts, but I
do have a problem. I have a 96 Dakota extended cab with a 3.9 v-6, two wheel

drive. Lately it has been giving a little bit of a jerk when the trans
shifts into overdrive. It does it about 45-48 mph. I tried it with od locked

out and it does the same thing when it shifts into high gear. When using od,

it does it when it shifts from high(4th) into od. I had a trans service
done, and my mechanic added a bottle of Lucas tranny magic. Its been about a

week now and still doing it. If I anticipate when it is going to shift into
od and let up on the gas a little, it won't do it. Truck has about 139,000
on it. Anybody had a similar problem or have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

If it'll fit, the full trailer is the better way to go. IIRC,
Christine barely fit on the standard UHaul car trailer when Mike towed
her home to Tom a few years ago, and they had to put the street tires
on as the offroad tires were too big.

Like someone else (I think Ray) said, test-fit it before the trip.

It's the throttle position sensor, (TPS), about $30 and 10 minutes to
replace, common on our Daks.

I remember that also. I seem to recall an old style, orange
u-haul trailer, the wheels had to be taken off in order to make
it fit. However, the pics of Mike towing Christine home show a
newer, larger, silver trailer, and there appears to be tons of
room to spare (http://home.tepidcola.com/gallery/dmlbbq5?page=15)

Mike towing Christine back to WI is the only time I remember
Christine on a U-haul trailer, so I have no idea when I would
have recalled Christine on the smaller trailer with the wheels
needing to be swapped out, but I'm sure it happened... ? Maybe
it was from 2004 or 2005 when Tom towed it out behind his Ram?
