Brake booster problem

The more I think about this, the more I'm wondering if our 2001 is in the
beginning stages. Is there any way it can be checked without a huge amount of
effort? Can it be adjusted in a way that it'll stay put? Or is it just a
matter of waiting until it completely fails and replacing it?
