Benefits of Return Style Fuel System

I've always heard the return style system is better. Can someone please
explain how and why?

Assuming that a return style pump will fit a '96 tank, would it be worth
installing it along with a return style fuel rail? The 318 will eventually
be an NA 408.

Would a return style pump function if the return port was just capped off
for now?
