That depends; what parts do you expect to break? :-) Its
kinda hard to say; I guess maybe the 7mm hex for the brake
calipers would be a good thing to have. On a long trip, I
usually just take along a really basic tool set, the type that
you can buy in Home Depot which has your basic wrenches,
small socket set, a couple of types of pliers, hammer, etc. all
in a plastic case. I also bring along extra engine oil, trans
and power steering fluid, a gallon or two of distilled water
for the radiator (or drinking in an emergency), a multimeter,
the FSM for the vehicle I'm driving, an OBD-II code reader (if
applicable) some tow straps, bungee cords, duct tape, paper
towels, fast orange, mechanic's gloves, an air tank, a can of
fix-a-flat, a bottle of Rescue (unless I'm driving the diesel)
and basically anything else that catches my eye which I think
might be useful as I wander through the garage getting ready.

I figure that stuff should get me through anything minor, and
in case its too much to deal with I also make sure to bring along
my cell phone and AAA card. Of course, Murphy's Law will ensure
that the tool you leave at home is going to be the one you need
the most. ;-) One very valuable tool that I make sure to always
have along on a road trip is a handgun with plenty of spare
ammo - carried concealed on my person where it is legal to do
so and locked in a case where it is not, in compliance with the
FOPA of '86. Its fairly useless when locked up, but still
potentially more useful than it would be sitting at home... I
also will usually have a GPS and a compass along with at least
a rudimentary map of the area I will be travelling through. A
credit card is good for unexpected problems, and a little cash
for those instances where maybe a credit card can't be used.

Hmmm, I guess this is going beyond what you actually were
looking for which was probably just hand tools :-) but I
like to be somewhat prepared when I'm taking a trip. With
some creative packing, a lot of useful stuff can fit into
the little nooks and crannies of a vehicle which would be
basically wasted space anyway. Anyhoo, I hope that helps! :-)
