I was told braking performance is improved with shorter sidewalls be less
forward flexing. I believe there would be less flexing and braking may be
improved but don't think it's anything noticeable. Maybe someone knows more
about this...

I have 17's on my truck now, have had them on for 75000 miles. No problems.
Just make sure you get the backspacing you want so the tire sits in the
wheelwell the way you want it to.
The ride is a little stiffer with the shorter sidewalls, but hardly
noticable. HTH
