small clunk in steering column on braking/accel

I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction here....

When I brake I get a slight clunk in the steering column. And when I accel I get another
clunk. The movement is not visible to the eye. But it can be felt in the steering
wheel.

When I brake the clunk is a tiny 'forward' movement. When I accel the clunk is a
'rearward' movement.

I know that some of the bushings in the suspension are bad. But does anyone know if
thats the cause of the clunk sound or is it ball joints or something else?

It's a Gen II 4x2 club cab with powersteering.

thanks
