Unfortunately, the Cherokee ws never offered with a
V8 engine. :-( It gets up and goes fairly well with the
4.0L I6, it would have been interesting to see what a V8
would have done for it. I'm guessing Jeep didn't want it
to compete against the Grand Cherokee. (Which is a shame in
a way since I really prefer the classic Cherokee styling
over the "wedge nose" Grand Cherokee.)
Anyhoo, speaking of the Grand Cherokee, and to finally
answer your question, it switched from the 5.2L V8 to the
4.7L V8 for the 1999 model year. So the last Grand Cherokee
with a 5.2L should be the 1998 model.
On a related topic, I think a lot of people are under the
impression that Mercedes/Daimler-Benz designed the 4.7L. This
is quite obviously impossible, considering that the merger took
place in November of 1998, and the 4.7L debuted in the '99 Grand
Cherokee; the 4.7L V8 is all Chrysler (RIP). This paragraph
has nothing to do with your question obviously, I just felt
the need to spew random, quasi-relevant facts into the ether.
