The primary changes for the 2000 models was the squared off dash. Body
changes were very minor and most all 1997-1999 parts will fit the 2000-2004
models. As for the engines in the 1997-2004 models, same engine - different
engine controller (NGC1, 2, 3).

The "Gen xxx" descriptions are mainly there to differentiate in between the
major model changes...minor cosmetic changes don't really count.

"Gen 2.75" Dakota - 1997 Model used 1996 sensors and PCM but newer body
style

If there were enough differences with the upgraded engines and slightly
modified body to make 1991 count as a new generation, then wouldn't the new
engines and slightly modified body in 2000 be enough to count as well?
Ultimately it's all semantics and it doesn't matter to me. I like my Dakota
the same no matter what you call it.
