OK, I'm going to bust balls ;) Then going by your definition below, 87-96 are
the same generation. They share the same front fenders, cab, bed and interior.
The differences are the radiator support, front bumper, grill, etc.. and
tailgate. And even those are interchangeable if done as a set, I've seen
several Gen I "87-90" Dakotas with Gen II "91-96" noses on them. As you said
below "minor cosmetic changes don't really count".

Also, the 5.2 Magnum didn't come out until the 92 model year and I believe that
is the same year the 3.9 magnum was also introduced though I believe the 5.2
Magnum was introduced first. A 91 would still have an LA block though there is
the possibility some late 91s came with early magnums. So breaking it down by
LA vs. Magnum your break would be 91/92.

Even though Ma Mopar designated the 87-96 as "N" Body, I, like you, always
accepted the standard DML created designations which split the "N" Body Dakotas
into 2 separate generations at <=90 or =>91
