ouch. definitely a rough week.

Not sure on the older trucks but I'm pretty sure that is the case on
the 3rd gens. Do you really use your 4 wheel drive or is it more of
the slippery road/boat ramp/occasional rutted driveway ort of thing?
I'd bet a light duty 231 behind a v8 would not be an issue.

Also, take a look at this chart to really make yourself a bit more
informed.

Damn, wrong end of the state.... Are you in a hurry on this or do
you have something else to drive? Maybe we could compare spare parts
in measurements & pictures. spline counts & input shaft lengths are
important. Are you handy with a wrench? Parts swapping may still do
the trick for you.

I started out with a broken 1998 automatic 231HD and a ~1996 standard
transmission 231SD but could not put them together for my use due to
not being able to swap the input shaft due to a difference in gear
cutting. Long story short but if you're the sort to swap parts
around and make things work I think you can make things work for
you. I may also have a take-off from my '98 if I can't end up
swapping tailshafts between my dead trans and Chad's 2wd spare that
I'm getting to put in...

Just for the record, the most common cause of the chain stretching to
the point of wearing through the case like you had is running it dry.
