Sounds to me like the sending unit is on it's way out.
Mine did that a couple of times. Then it got stuck on 1/4 tank and i ran out
of gas.
Thought the pump went bad because i wasn't getting any fuel. 500 buxs later
i had a new pump and sending unti installed.
