Hmmm ok so I'm going to hope that I didn't toast anything, by applying
12V to the ground wire? LOL. I could have sworn that I read voltage at
one of them, PRIOR to my appling power to it myself.

Awesome, thanks Ray!! I'm going to re-do my wire job and see if I can
actuate the solenoids manually. I'm still in the trial and error phase
of this - trying to determine if this little swap can be successful or not.
