Last post for this. The crankshaft sensor was bad as it checked bad with an
ohm meter. It was "open" on all three legs. The timing chain had more than
30 degrees of slop. Replacing the timing chain fixed the problem. The
instructions for checking the crank sensor said to move the 1 cyl to tdc and
check for a spark. Had we done that while looking at the dis rotor we would
have seen the slop in the timing chain. Thank you all for your help.

The actual pumg is at 45 psi. The pump comes on with key and stays on long
enough, 2 seconds, to pressure the rail. Something then is turning it off.
It is less than a year old, and we went thru the symptoms when the pump
failed. I believe something electrically is not "ready" and drops out the
relay. Does any one know how to jumper the fuel pump on? It is as simple
as plugging in something in the relay box?

It bucked and spurted up to 46. It only ran smoothly 2 or 3 seconds at a
time. After that it would not idle or even rev up.

We put the new sensor in and test drive them for up to 5 miles. Did the
truck just stop after 46mph?

Nope...needs to slow down under a load. We did try that at training and
you'd have to push the vehicle up to about 100mph and then slow down in 3rd
(not safe on jack stands). Heck, you can use the highway or an expressway
to do that.

Remove old sensor, install new sensor, reset PCM (this resets the adaptive
numerator), and drive it up to 60mph (not in OD but in 3rd or with OD off),
and let it decel without using the brakes. This allows the PCM to relearn
the Cam/Crank difference...takes all but a few minutes. (That's the proper
procedure.)

You just cleared out the "Adaptive Numerator" (Cam/Crank reference). You'll
need to drive it a little while to determine if in fact that cleared it all

I disconnected the battery, reconnected , and now the engine idles and will
go in to gear. I think it fixed.

That's correct. Upon initial key-on, the fuel pump will pressurize the
system but then will turn off. The vehicle needs to be running in order for
the pump to stay running. (PCM needs to see engine RPM via the crank sensor
to keep the fuel pump circuit active.)

My 96 3.9 dak will start but will not run. I hear the fuel pump come on
when I turn the key and after a few seconds the fuel pump stops. The relays
for the fuel pump and auto-shutdown are still energized after the fuel pump
quits running. When the fuel pump is running it has 45 psi. What can be
shutting off the fuel pump?
