The cams do make a difference in the engine's performance. You can get
close to the HO engines performance with a programmer for the non HO
engines. (Superchips for example)

The timing curve is more aggressive in the HO engines but not a huge change
in injector PW% (fuel delivery). As for compression, you can use selective
MLS head gaskets to change compression on the engines (not by much...but it
helps - done that already on a few 4.7L's in the shop).
