RE: Tensioner and idler bearings

I've cut new and used filters apart (friends at different lube shops and
dealerships). How do you get the crud out of them...easy - solvent tank
and Hexane.

You look at the filter material, bypass valve (which is very cheap plastic
in quite a few), anti-drainback valve (really cheap rubber on the lower-end
ones),filter reinforcement (rubber band or actual metal wire), filter length
(many are only 1/2 the length of the actual canister), and thickness of the
actual canister and seal (burst strength). I've seen quite a few of the
"yellow" and "white" lube place filters with broken bypass valves or filter
material that's come apart.

The reason for cutting the used ones open is simple - anyone can look at a
new filter and see how good or bad it works. Cut apart a used filter that's
been run in daily driving condtions and you'll see much more in depth on how
quickly they come apart (or hold up).

The Mopar, MotorTrend, WIX, and K&N filters look all almost identical in
construction, material, bypass, and anti-drainback valve. The Mopar and WIX
(Gold) use similar heavy duty silicone on the anti-drainback valve. This is
the one thing that most people with Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep vehicles complain
about - lifter tick on initial startup. Most of the time we find the
"orange", "yellow", or "white" filters on there....remove them, put a Mopar
filter on the vehicle, and problem goes away.

BTW: The Mopar, MotorTrend, and WIX filters all are right at $5.00 - don't
know where people are coming up with "stealership" pricing on that. ;)

You're cutting new filters apart? How much you
pullin' down a year,Bernd? :) Five bucks is a lot of
money to waste...I don't care who ya are!

Second question: You're cutting used filters apart?
How can you tell the difference with all that oil and
crud?

Please help me to understand,sir!

Thanks!
