If you are just pulling in and out on the hubs that is nothing to worry about. These differentials use C clips to retain the axles so there should be a little play.
I will also assume that the diffy juice is probably original as well as the brakes were, so pop why not pop the lid and have a look, put some RTV on the pumpkin where the gasket should go and fill it back up with fresh juice?
