I think at this point we're talking past each other. Of course we
shouldn't be buying buggy whips (unless you're into that sort of thing).
Perhaps the relevant issue is: What do we do with skilled workers (human
beings) who we've displaced because we now buy cheap-ass widgets from
somewhere else? It would be a shame to simply waste this productivity.
Rather than kicking them to the curb because life isn't fair, we should
help them re-tool as soon as possible so that they can keep making you
money. For example, thanks to gummint backed student loans, I was able
to get a decent education (twice) and, though hard study, get out of my
previous mind-numbing "job", and be a productive contributor to the
local economy. (Well...usually productive...I should be working on a
SQL server right now.)
