I have heard people say that it is because they want you to change
the filter at the same time, so that people don't just drain and
refill, but I've got to go with Ray on this one, I'm sure its the
pennies. :-)
Fortunately, it is pretty easy and relatively inexpensive to add
one, should you so desire. Summit sells a drain plug kit, you just
drill a hole and bolt it in place. It gives you a 1/8 NPT plug. I
have used them to add temp sensors to tranny and oil pans, they work
good for that, you just use a sensor with 1/8 NPT threads instead of
the plug. :-) You do need to have the pan off to do it, but since
you've got to pull the tranny pan to change the fluid anyway, that's
not really an issue in this case.
