My '92 318 used to do that when I was using a Fram filter. Never done it
again since I switched to K&N oil filters. Even when the truck is parked
during the racing off-season (Nov - April) it doesn't tick on first startup.

Another thing to consider is an exhaust leak between the heads and
manifolds/headers. Can sound just like a lifter but if it's minor it will
also get quiet once the engine is warmed up.
