It's not hard at all. A screwdriver and hammer to tap it out and a long
socket to put in the new one (or preferably the seal driver). It will leak
fluid out though - be careful not to take an ATF bath.

Subject: DML: Tail Shaft Seal on a 45RFE

How big of a job is it going to be to replace the tail shaft seal? It
appears to be leaking from there, the trans fluid and filters were changed
maybe 6 months or 2000 miles ago. The truck is a 2001 4.7 with 64k miles.
