My 2000 4.7 did this a couple years ago. Does it happen when you are coming
up to a stop? Look at the speedo. If it drops to zero suddenly then it is
the speed sensor in the rear axle. Mine was doing that, did not load any
codes at all. But I noticed that the speedometer would drop to zero when I
slowed to 10MPH and under. It was at that time that the engine would cough
sometimes and stall. Took 5 minutes to change the speedo sensor on the top
of the pumpkin.

Worth a look.
