I finally wrapped up my repairs from nearly 2 months ago tonight after
an extended trip home for the last 12 days.
To recap: I snapped the mounting flange off the back of my 44RE. I
also discovered that not only was the fluid in my NP231HD always full
of metal, but the chain was finally stretched out and it sounded just
awful.
So I got a donor 44RE with tcase, and swapped OD units, and cursed a
bit about nonstandard parts and took that tcase apart, swapped inputs,
and put it together. Tonight I finally changed the trans filter,
tightened up the pan, put the front driveshaft on (I'd lost a bolt,
otherwise that would have been done already), put in some fluid and
was going to start it to top off the transmission.
It clicks but will not crank. battery is reading 12.5v, and down to
11.4v when trying to crank. I tried a jump and I'm hoping that in the
cold and my impatience I had a bad connection, but it made no
difference.
Any thoughts? I turned the motor over 1/4 rev by hand and nothing
feels the least bit wrong. I've tried with the trans in N and P. If
I recall right the neutral safety switch will not allow the loud click
when it prevents a start. If it's not a dead battery though that's my
next culprit.
I will be trying a jump start again tomorrow when it's not so late and
I'm not so cold nor as frustrated.

PS - Jon, I'm really jealous of your proximity to the cheapest diesel
anywhere between here and Minnesota on the Seneca Nation res.
