Have you pulled the interior panel to check out the mechanism? I know
with my Outback, the tailgate latch/handle will stick in the "open"
position and I have to push it back to the "closed" position with my
fingers. Apparently the mechanism gets corrosion on it & the levers
stick.

I haven't opened mine up yet to check it out.
