It is fixed! Thought I'd post up the results...
Turned out to be the Torque Converter as I had suspected, but I didn't
know a good test until a local tranny guy told me. We took it for a
ride and light pressure on the throttle 50-65 MPH would regularly do
it. He says "When it happens immediately touch the brake pedal". Sure
enough that instantly shut off lockup and cleared the groan, stumble,
vibration.
With 128K and plans to keep the truck as well as drive it to Florida
towing a boat, I opted for a rebuild along with TC replacement. A bit
of a nut to swallow, but that along with the intake gaskets and a
tuneup and it's never run this nice!
