No special tool required on the 4.7L's - just a few zip-ties. I can swap
the cams out in about 40 minutes (start to finish). The 4.7L (and Hemi's -
5.7L/6.1L) are much easier than the old 3.9/5.2/5.9L engines.

He has to replace his pinion bearing in his rear diff (something we've
never done before, as we've never worked this extensively on a RWD
vehicle before). Some of the "special tools" look pretty important
unless you want to spend several hours fiddling with a home brew
solution and ordering small parts separately to make the tools. There's
one part in the FSM for the timing chains on the 4.7L that says to
install the idler sprocket and secondary chains "as an assembly" using
special tool xxx to hold the chains on to the sprocket... without that
tool it could be done but I bet you'd need to get drunk afterwards. ;)

Doing cams/timing chains on the 4.7L looks like a royal pain in the
$#$#@ from how the FSM describes it with special tools galore. Thank
god I never bought a 4.7L, I'll stick with the 318's single timing
chain, thanks. But I still get to suffer along with him.

I've never looked in another car manufacturer's FSM before, I figured
they all had special tools. I guess not. I can see a geeky competition
starting though, that's just how engineers, or I should say any men, are.
