I've read of other people on the list here doing that. Just be careful what
you remove and how so that the front diff and the transfer case stay sealed
and you should be fine.
My '01 has a different setup for the front driveshaft from yours, but I ran
without it for a while when its CV joint failed. On mine, just unbolting it
and pulling it out was no big deal.
