Same here (the orange stuff). If I've got something else to do,
I'll leave it sit for a little bit (a few minutes to a few hours)
before refilling. I've never had a leak either. I use a scraper to
remove the old RTV from the diff and a wire wheel mounted on a bench
grinder works excellent for removing the RTV from the cover. (I also
use it to clean any RTV off the bolt threads.) I suppose I could use
a wire wheel mounted on an angle grinder/drill to clean off the diff
itself, but I've never tried that because I didn't want to throw junk
inside of the diff. (I suppose the diff could be stuffed with shop
towels first but I've never bothered.)

Anyhoo, Permatex Copper or Ultra Copper has worked great for me so
far. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean, dry and straight. Run
the bead of RTV on the inside of the bolt holes.
