DML BBQ: Glasses recovered. :-)

For those of you who weren't aware of it already, during the DML
BBQ on Sunday afternoon while a group of us were checking out the
flood results near the lower falls, I dropped my glasses into a rather
large pool, about 15 feet deep. Diving down to find them at the time
was not successful and quickly abandoned due to the depth, darkness
and debris on the bottom.

I managed to dig up an old mask I used to wear about 20 years ago
in the swimming pool. Its back strap had long ago deteriorated and
broken, so I made do with a couple of bungee cords. I also sealed up
my brightest flashlight in several plastic bags, just in case it was
dark under there. My 5 gallon bead breaker air tank has a quick
connect valve on it, so I filled it to 120psi and grabbed a long
section of air hose and put a valve on the end. I also grabbed one of
my brother's 25lb barbell weights and tied a rope to it.

The air tank gave me about 8 minutes of underwater time, the weight
kept me from floating, and the mask allowed me to actually see what I
was doing. Unfortunately, I started out in the wrong area, but as I
was searching, my Dad came by and pointed out the place where he
thought I had dropped them. This was just as my air had run out. I
dove down, and sure enough, there they were. :-)

So, the good news is I don't need to buy a new pair of glasses.
The bad news is, while I was down there, I dropped my cell phone in
the stream!! It sat under 2-3 inches of running water for about a
half an hour. (I didn't realize it was missing until I came back up
to the house.) The battery cover must have popped off when it hit the
rock, I found it a few feet further downstream. I am pretty sure the
phone was on when it went in. When I picked it up, it had a half-on,
half-off white screen. I pried the battery out so it would be
completely off, then took everything back to the house. I let it sit
in the sun for a few hours, popped the battery back in, and it seems
to be working fine. :-) Even if it does decide to stop working, its
only a Tracphone which would cost $20-30 to replace, so that's not a
bad trade for a $300 pair of glasses. Still, I guess it goes to show
that you don't even need to be driving a vehicle to suffer DML BBQ
carnage. :-)

Oh, speaking of carnage, on my way back from my recovery mission, I
found a couple of pieces of broken tail-light which I am thinking
might have come from Mike's cute lil' Dak? I found one large section
just after the longest 100 yards, in the spot where the large
grapevine came down into the path, and another smaller section further
along.
