The backup light switch on my '01 died over the summer. Took forever to find
it, since the FSM says it's on the passenger side. It's actually on the
driver's side. Easy to change, though. And you can test it with a meter to see
if it's actually bad, since it's just a simple SPST switch.

Check your old one, see if it was actually bad? Check the new one you
installed, to see if it's actually good?

I don't know how your '98 works, but the switch for my '01 looked more like
there's something in the trans that pushes on it. Probably a shift fork or
something like that. It didn't look to me like the oil level would have
anything to do with it.

One of those inexpensive continuity tester lamps may be helpful for
troubleshooting this on your truck. Find a convenient ground, then start
poking the wires for the backup lamp until you find where the voltage is
getting lost.
