Phillip,

If you have moderate mechanical skills, removing the head on a pushrod engine isn't that difficult, the only tricky part is you will need to be sure you number the pushrods to make sure they go back exactly where they came from, and replace the rockers as soon as you pull the push rod from under them, again so they stay where they belong.

I'd just drop the head pipe off the manifold and pull both together, to deliver to the machine shop.
