Sorry, missed the original post.
If it happens to be the brushes (which seems likely), you can often
get it started by whacking the starter with a hammer.
Not a long term solution, but worth a try for a potential one way
trip. I did have a friend back in school do it for awhile while he
sorted out a trip to the mechanic.
