What matters with LEDs is current, not voltage. You need a resistor in series
with the LED to limit the current. If you can get the specs on the LED you're
using, calculating the correct resistor to use with a given voltage source
(12V, in your case) isn't hard. You need to know the maximum current it can
sustain.
