I run Castrol Syntec 5w-50 in the transmission and Valvoline 75W-120
synthetic in the diffs.

It took a lot of calls and a whole lot of tranfers to finally get a
Chrysler engineer to confirm that the NV3500 uses a high grade motor oil as
its lubricant. He said that the Castrol would work fine, and for more than
a year now it has. This is not a particular surprise as many of the newer
aluminum transmissions use motor oil. Especially the imports.

Please note that this is totally on the word of an engineer over the phone,
the manual, service schedule, and factory repair guides all refer solely to
a Chrysler part number only. Even the bottle of fluid contains no
viscosity or other standard markings. I have no proof other than a
functioning and smooth operating transmission to confirm that this change
is OK. I took a chance and seemed to have won.
