The key with now is a tread that can hold the snow in the tire. Since snow
sticks well to snow, the more snow the tire holds, the more traction you
get.
There are plenty of such tires available. as long as it has a Mud and Snow
designation, it will likely work. I'm currently running Mickey Thompson
Baja Belted HP's, but they are rather expensive (work real good though!)
Two weekends ago, I was in New Hampshire skiing when we got about 8 inches
of snow. My 4WD didn't want to work, and with only minor difficulty, drove
the 43 miles back to the place we were staying without trouble. And that
was hills and sharp cornered mountain roads.
With a 2WD, a big difference will be to add some weight to the bed in the
winter.
