I thought I'd kick in my brief comment, since I've seen a couple of
mailings condemning the regulations on freon and AC self-service.

I don't think the government is out to screw anyone. While I, too, am
not a scientist, and don't have any particular knowledge about how freon
damages the atmosphere, it seems to me that the regulations catch us
DIY'ers in the same net that addresses the problem in industry. However,
perhaps we can accept that regulation, and possible associated
inefficiency with freon substitutes, knowing that we are not contributing
even an unmeasurable bit to environmental degradation. I think it better
to suffer widespread regulatory limitations and less efficient cooling
than to contribute, even a little bit, to atmospheric destruction.
Perhaps by putting up with these regulations and inconveniences, we can
avoid stricter regulation that could--I suppose--eliminate environmental
toxins such as freon altogether.
