Another thing to check is to make sure the speedometer
sensor is not intermittent. I have had a similar
problem with my 89 Dakota and my Daytonas. The
Dakota's use both a mechanical (to the speedometer)
and electrical (for the computer) sensor on the
end of the transmission. The computer will not
let the transmission shift into O/D unless the
computer reads 35MPH.
Another thing you can look at is the temp sensor.
The computer will not engage O/D until engine
temp reaches 60F (60 or 70). A bad temp sensor
could be messing things up. Both of these
problems should trip a fault code in the
computer. A good place to start. I don't have
the service manuals in front of me right now or
I would let you know what fault codes to look for.
Have fun,
Jake
