94 dakota fuel module

I have a 94, V6, Club cab, with a 22 gal tank...
The fuel module went out (in the middle of a very
busy highway). That's when I learned of this fine
piece of engineering. Does anyone know why
Chrysler created such a monstrosity? For those who
didn't know, the fuel module is a VERY expensive,
dealer only part that actually fits down into the
gas tank and does multiple things (filter, regulate)
As expensive as it is, it should make coffee too!
Any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul Caldwell
