====================================================
I have used K&N products in 3 motorcycles, a 87 Chevy Spectrum, 92
Dakota V8 Magnum and 95 Ram 2500. ALL have see marked increase in
performance. I just moved the K&N w/ 75K miles on it from my Dakota to
my RAM Van and the increase was noticable. Makes a nice "sucking"
sound, too, as the intake is only 36" from my ear.
My FJ1200 requires it because it is a part of the K&N Stage I carb kit and
V&H racing exhaust.
As for the wrap around the OEM filter, I suppose it serves the same
purpose as the K&N Pre-Filtercharger, indicated for dusty conditions.
According to K&N, it reduces the airflow by 10-15% but extends the life
of the filter. If you live in the city, don't get it. I suppose ChryCo puts it on
to keep oil blow-back from contaminating the filter. I have washed mine
with K&N filter cleaner, then put it on the shelf.
For you tech-heads, order the K&N catalog. It has a great discussion on
intake airflow and gives a good explanation on how a dirty K&N is better
than a new paper (the outer screen lines up the molecules for better flow
and less friction). I have catalogs for both auto and M/C. They also make
crankcase breather filters, oil filters and many other applications.
I'm sold.
