About tightening the top nut on front shocks on the Dakota, or anything
else that uses eyeless mounts: there's a flat on the tops of the piston
shaft above the threads that's 1/4 inch (I think) across. Stick the
piston shaft up through the mounting bushings, clap the top washer on,
start screwing on the nut by hand and when the nut clears the flat use a
wrench on the flat to hold the piston shaft and screw the nut home. DO
NOT USE PLIERS ON THE PISTON SHAFT! If you scuff up the piston shaft, and
the scuffed up area gets into the seals they will be TOAST. And you WILL
scuff the shaft. After the nut gets tight enough you won't have to use
the wrench (open end or adjustable or Vise Grips even) anymore.
