I have had the door panels off of my Dakota many a time. Your theory is
correct, you just pry up on the panel. The best thing I have found to do is
to run your finger along a part that you can get pried away and just pop out
the clips all the way around the door. There is also a special tool for the
job. I am not sure if you have to go to a dealer to find one or what.
